We have a TracFone v176 (GSM,Motorola)and wanted to add a MouSing ringtone to the handset, preferably at no charge. We already managed to add a WinChime ringtone.
Generate a MIDI File
We know that this phone is capable of playing MIDI files directly, from the previous experiment.
MouSing allows us to generate a MIDI file, but requires the player to understand the Pitch Bend message. Does the V176, and similar cell phones, understand this rather obscure MIDI message? We set the pitchbend parameter in MouSing to a large number, and try a test file: Click MouSing menu File-> Save MIDI File As, enter a file name, and specify the number of notes in the file.
Using MouSing, we create a unique file with our chosen program settings: pitch, musical scale, and so forth. We choose to do a simple EEEeaaaaaaooooaaaAAAAhhh 50’s science fiction movie style sound effect, not trying to mimic any particular melody. This has the added benefit that we are not using some musician’s creative work without paying a license fee.

Send MIDI File to Cell
Using the method described in detail in a previous article, we send the MouSing-generated MIDI file as an MMS message attachment from an e-mail account, addressing tocellNumber@mms.att.net .
Save the File as RingTone
The phone received our message and could play the attached MIDI file. Click the “navigation” button, select “Save Content“, and use the file name “MouSing”.
At the cell phone top level menu, press “Navigate” button->Multimedia-> Sounds-> MouSing->”Navigate” button -> “Apply as Ring Tone“.
Our cell-phone now has a unique MouSing ringtone!
