WinChime RingTone: Cricket RAZR

A close associate recently acquired a Motorola RAZR V3C phone, for use with Cricket cell provider. We wanted to add a WinChime ringtone to the handset, preferably at no charge.

Generate a MIDI File

WinChime allows us to generate a MIDI file, using the currently selected program settings for scale, wind, instrument, and so forth. Click WinChime menu File-> Save MIDI File As, enter a file name, and specify the number of notes in the file.

Send MIDI File to Cell

The RAZR uses a mini-USB connector and should be capable of trading files with a PC. Plugging into a Vista computer informs us of driver problems, but connecting to a WinXP computer, and installing the drivers available at xxx(registration required) worked fine. Using the open-source BitPim, we had problems getting the phone to be recognized by the software, but following a hint posted on a MotoModders forum, we manually selected the phone model and didn’t click “Find Phone”, and a connection was established.

Although we could transfer pictures just fine, audio and ringtone files couldn’t be sent or from the handset. BitPim documentation provided a clue:

Unless we could find a work-around or wanted to experiment with re-flashing the phone, we needed to find another way to get the MIDI file to the cell.

Send MIDI File to Cell — Try Again

This particular cell service provider provides a free way to send MMS messages to Cricket phones from an e-mail account. We sent a message, with a WinChime-generated MIDI file as an attachment.

Save the File as RingTone

The phone received our message and could play the attached MIDI file.
